About the Competitions:
The Oregon Economics Challenge starts as an online competition held during the month of March using the online testing portal provided through the University of Nebraska.
Students compete in teams consisting of a minimum of three (3) students and a maximum of four (4) [recommended]
The top placing teams in both divisions in the online qualifier are notified the first week of April and invited to the in person State Championship round. The Championships consist of
- First Round: two multiple choice tests, one taken individually, the other as a collaborative team test.
- The top two teams in each division then face off head-to-head in a Quiz Bowl-style competition.
- The winning teams are named Oregon State Champion and then move on to the online Semifinals National Qualifier round, usually held within two weeks of the Championship. The National Semifinals are held near-simultaneously at schools of all State Champions.
There are competitions in two divisions so even students who have never taken an economics class can participate:
ADAM SMITH DIVISION - The "Adam Smith" Division is restricted to students who are enrolled in either a two-semester macro and micro economics course sequence, or any economics course labeled as AP, IB, honors, or differentiated. Additionally, students who have participated in the Economics Challenge before must register for the Adam Smith Division.
DAVID RICARDO DIVISION - The "David Ricardo" Division is for students who are not eligible to compete in the Adam Smith Division.
Teachers should explore the links to the left to fully understand the competion Rules, Dates, and the useful information and links at the Nationals tab.
